Eyewear and Sunglasses Designers Exhibition

LUNETTES KOLLEKTION

MYKITA Maison Martin Margiela Campaign 2014

MYKITA

MYKITA opens new shop at

the foot of the Matterhorn

From the city to the slopes: the MYKITA Shop Zermatt is located at an altitude of 1,600 meters, in one of the best-known skiing regions in the Swiss Alps and at the same time in the heart of a bustling town environment. The second MYKITA Shop in Switzerland unites the Berlin-based eyewear specialists’ own aesthetic principles with optical precision. This branch has a particularly strong emphasis on MYKITA MYLON frames: extremely light and practical sports-style frames that make both a perfect companion for the mountains and also a practical everyday accessory.

The MYKITA Shop in Zermatt is a marriage of the modern and the traditional. The display window, with its original wood framing to re-tain the winter resort look, provides an open view of the all-white interior, with a design based on the progressive composition of different elements and contrasting materials. The room was stripped of its wood panelling to leave exposed concrete walls and floors. The steel girders were likewise liberated from their casing and restored to their original condition. The result is a kind of installation with a bold and simple construction that preserves the original character of the space. The primary design element of the shop interior is the MYKITA Wall. It comprises perforated steel angle beads that are reinvented from their regular function as heavy-duty shelving supports. The resulting structure is backlit and serves as a presentation area. Individual metal shelf elements inserted into the wall provide each model with its own little stage. The MYKITA Shop in Zermatt is in addition the first to feature an expansive MYKITA MYLON Wall, bringing the ”future look of sports” to the mountains. The integrated Relaxed Vision Center is a special lab equipped with state-of-the-art precision instruments from Carl Zeiss research. Customers can consult the MYKITA in-house optometrist, who generates customised optical profiles and performs an exact adaptation of the lenses to both the wearer’s eyesight and their facial physiognomy. Quality, precision and products ”made in Germany” are the common themes behind the partnership of MYKITA with the world-renowned optical solutions specialist Zeiss. Zermatt is now home to the ninth MYKITA Shop worldwide – joining Berlin, New York, Paris, Zurich, Vienna, Tokyo, Monterrey (Mexico) and Cartagena (Colombia).

Univers lunetier créatif d'exception

DITA (Californie, États-Unis)

THIERRY LASRY (Paris, France)

The glasses from the Berlin

Brand New: www.mykita.com
Now with online shop

Coinciding with the www.mykita.com relaunch, MYKITA introduces their first online shop. From now on the glasses from the Berlin manufactory are not only available at eight own shops and selected retailers worldwide, but around the clock, online. In addition to the sunglasses from all the MYKITA design series, the collaborations with fashion designers Bernhard Willhelm and Damir Doma are also available for front-door delivery. To start with glasses will only be shipped within Germany; an expansion of the online shop to include international markets is planned for autumn 2013.
The new website also provides a look behind the scenes at MYKITA HAUS: a photographic tour through the modern manufactory and four short films illustrate the development process of the handcrafted glasses.
The MYKITA film was filmed in Berlin over several days and captures the atmosphere at the manufactory – in addition to daily life and work at MYKITA HAUS, the company staff and the entire value chain are portrayed. The analogue film was shot using 16mm, a format used to make the first cinema movies. Another two films focus more intently on the production process of the spectacles. The model COCO, a frame made out of stainless steel, and WYNONA, an acetate model, are followed by a camera on their path from rough draft to the final presentation in the shop. Chilly Gonzales, a Canadian jazz pianist and long-time resident of Berlin, provides the soundtrack to all the films.
MYKITA MYLON and the production of avant-garde high-tech sport glasses is brought to life in its own digital film: extreme macro and highspeed sequences were used to represent the uniqueness of the ultra-light material and the complex manufacturing process.
The new MYKITA website was designed in responsive design and adjusts to suit the screen resolution of the respective network device – from smartphone to desktop. The website’s integrated shop finder makes it even easier to locate MYKITA Shops and selected MYKITA stockists in the area.
The new website and online shop is available right here: www.mykita.com

MYKITA / DAMIR DOMA S / S 2013

MYKITA / DAMIR DOMA
S / S 2013

DD01. A construction.
From Latin: constructio = layer together, build up, erect; from the prefix con- = and the verb
struere = to layer, assemble

The progressive use of contrasting materials, the aesthetics of an openly displayed construction and the melange of cool and warm colour tones are the defining elements of DD01, the first liaison between MYKITA and DAMIR DOMA.
What began with an in-depth study of forms, colours and surfaces, over the course of the collaboration ultimately developed into a circular silhouette in stainless steel and horn. The combination of cool stainless steel and warm natural horn creates both visual and haptic contrast reminiscent of the characteristic mixture of coarse, stiff fabric and soft flowing textures in DAMIR DOMA’s collections.
The result is a futuristic look that elevates the recurring round motif in Doma’s work to another level. “This particular shape perfectly rounds up the DAMIR DOMA look. From the very beginning, our aim was to translate the traditional shape into something modern and create an iconic object,” says Damir Doma. At the same time, DD01 is a historic reference to the round glasses worn by the intellectual avant-garde throughout time.
The beauty of DD01 lies not in hiding its construction but in revealing it. Typical of MYKITA frames, all of the components are cut out of high-quality stainless steel, coated in gold, platinum or graphite, developed from flat metal sheets and only transformed into a threedimensional object by bending and folding. The horn rings, visible at the front and at the back, are encompassed by the frame and openly reveal the structure of the glasses – a reminiscent of the layerings in Damir Doma’s fashion designs.
“The openly revealed construction of the glasses reflects MYKITA’s fundamental design approach: the technical solution must at the same time be an aesthetic one. We combine traditional manufacturing by hand with modern technology, resulting in a contemporary luxury product, made from the finest, natural materials,” says Moritz Krueger, CEO and Creative Director of MYKITA.
In a complex process, the rings are produced from eight different millimetre-thin horn plates combined with each other to create the individual blend of tones. The natural horn is available in the colours grey-white or grey-anthracite with corresponding grey, brown or black lenses, or as a correction frame. All lenses are from the traditional lens manufacturer ZEISS.
The material, which has been used for making glasses for centuries because of its exceptional skin-friendly characteristics, comes from Indian water buffalo and is supplied by Germany’s most renowned producer of horn products. The horn rings, which sit directly on the nose, guarantee perfect comfort for the wearer.
The packaging of the glasses is a beautiful collage of natural materials: DD01 comes in a highquality leather case, with a special strap system so the glasses can be worn as an accessory attached to the belt and are incorporated into the look.
DD01 can be purchased in all MYKITA shops, the Damir Doma flagship store as well as selected opticians and fashion stores from spring 2013.

About Damir Doma

DAMIR DOMA’s collections are lit by a soft, melancholic quest for tranquility. Examining the ephemeral quality of the human body, his designs encapsulate a measured study of proportion and a melange of textures – divining a juxtaposition of rough and refined.

Silhouettes draw upon a myriad of inspirations from the worlds of art and architecture, foregoing embellishment and decoration for a purity of form. Doma’s work is harmoniously linked by a sense of uniform and an obsessive interplay between shadow and light.

Questioning the modern wardrobe, garments offer multiple expressions of identity – contrasting elements of androgyny with dress codes across cultural and historical spheres. The Croatian-born designer grew up surrounded by toiles in his mother’s atelier in Germany and later studied fashion in Munich and Berlin, where he graduated in 2004.

After gaining experience in the ateliers of prominent Belgian designers in Antwerp, he relocated to Paris to join the Paper Rain group in 2007. Damir launched his first menswear collection on the official schedule for the Spring Summer 2008 season, and three years later showed his first womens prét-à-porter collection for Autumn Winter 2010.
