Prada exhibition

Costumes designed by Miuccia Prada and Catherine Martin

for Baz Lurhmann’s upcoming film of The Great Gatsby

to be on display in New York, Tokyo and Shanghai

A special exhibition of selected costumes designed by Miuccia Prada and costume designer Catherine Martin for Baz Luhrmann’s upcoming film adaptation of The Great Gatsby will be on display May 1 – 12, 2013 at the Prada New York Epicenter at 575 Broadway in New York City. The exhibition will then travel and appear at the Prada Tokyo Epicenter store from June 14 – 30 and the IFC Mall in Shanghai mid-July.

An Academy Award® and Tony® winning costume designer and art director, Catherine Martin is world-renowned for her collaborations with husband Baz Lurhmann on the films Strictly Ballroom, Romeo + Juliet, Moulin Rouge and the Broadway stage design for La Bohéme. The exhibition titled Catherine Martin and Miuccia Prada Dress Gatsby includes women’s gowns, dresses, hats, shoes and jewelry as well as sketches, production stills, backstage footage and film trailers. The exhibition opening will coincide with the world première of Luhrmann’s film The Great Gatsby on May 1 at the Lincoln Center’s Avery Fisher Hall. The Great Gatsby will go on to open the 66th Cannes International Film Festival on May 15, 2013.

Very strict guidelines came from Catherine Martin in terms of references and details on fabrics, colors, materials that had to be period accurate, but modern at the same time. While working on the costumes, Miuccia Prada realized how many pieces created for the Prada and Miu Miu runways in different seasons had a very ‘20s mood once integrated in the movie’s direction. At once historical and utterly contemporary, the dresses are realized in brilliant iridescent metallic lamé, sequins, silk taffeta, dyed fur, velvet and styled with fantastical hats, shoes and accessories.

The exhibition includes mannequins displaying looks for each character coupled with video content drawn from the film and behind-the-scenes and, for the New York Epicenter, a two hundred foot mural depicting a montage drawn from the spectacular party scenes showing Jay Gatsby’s Long Island mansion. The exhibition - curated by New York studio 2x4 - is designed to change for each iteration and reflect the unique characteristics of each location.

in mostra a New York, Tokyo e Shanghai

a place for new stories...

PRADA JOURNAL: a place for new stories

“Quali realtà ci restituiscono i nostri occhi?

PRADA JOURNAL: a place for new stories

18 April 2013 – Prada, in keeping with the brand's innovative spirit, launches a literary contest in cooperation with Giangiacomo Feltrinelli Editore.

As it spans across fashion and literature, Prada continues in a quest for new talents, with Feltrinelli Editore contributing to the house's fifty years of publishing experience. This prompts the search for new artists who can see the world with a unique, rare gaze.

The literary contest also stems from the curiosity to explore innovative languages by means of forms of expression leading to the written word, thus creating an independent platform of interest and an unprecedented reserve for literary research.

“What are the realities that our eyes give back to us? And how are these realities filtered through lenses?”

By using the metaphor of prescription glasses, Prada enters a world made of written words, rather than spoken, thus launching a challenge to explore and enhance the individual interpretation of reality. Optical frames become an opportunity and a tool to investigate diverse creative worlds: a preferred channel and a window on our world, and - why not - on new potential worlds.

The contest opens today, April 18, and it will close on June 18.
