ADEAM

The ADEAM Fall 2014 Collection
“The train came out of the long border tunnel – and there was the snow country. The night had turned white.” This is one of the most beautiful lines of Japanese literature that opens Yasunari Kawabata’s novel, Snow Country. This novel tells the tale of love between a novelist from Tokyo and a provincial geisha, set in the hot spring town of Yuzawa. I was drawn to the stark beauty of the heroine, Komako, that captivates even the most idle flâneur. The contrast between her white porcelain skin and her blushed cheeks conjures the image of a single pink chrysanthemum blossoming in the snow land of rural Japan. Komako and her traditional Japanese beauty became the starting point of the collection, with silhouettes influenced by kimono and hakama, a long pleated culotte popular during the Taisho to Showa Period in Japan. Fabrications of a classic kimono influenced the textiles, with obi-inspired brocade and silver swallow print inspired by Taisho Period kimono patterns. I also looked to the protagonist of the story, Shimamura, for inspiration. 1930s in Japan was a time when men’s fashion was westernized and British-style tailors became popular in Tokyo. Urban dilettantes like Shimamura wore tailored suits and topcoats. The ADEAM girl has a little bit of both – the feminine delicateness of Komako and the carefree ruggedness of Shimamura.

A Native Japanese, Hanako was born in Tokyo and moved to
New York City at the age of 5, spending most of her childhood there. She
attended Columbia University in the City of New York, and studied
Anthropology and Art History. While in college, Hanako partook in various
fashion internships, developing an undying love for fashion. In 2011,
Hanako launched her own label ADEAM with a capsule collection of 15
pieces. In March 2012, ADEAM was invited by the Japanese government
to present its Fall 2012 collection at Shanghai Fashion Week. ADEAM
showed its Spring 2013 collection at Tokyo Fashion Week, and debuted at
New York Fashion Week for Fall 2013. Inspired by her two hometowns
Tokyo and New York, Hanako continues to create collections that infuse
art and wearability.

MYKITA

MYKITA opens new shop at

the foot of the Matterhorn

From the city to the slopes: the MYKITA Shop Zermatt is located at an altitude of 1,600 meters, in one of the best-known skiing regions in the Swiss Alps and at the same time in the heart of a bustling town environment. The second MYKITA Shop in Switzerland unites the Berlin-based eyewear specialists’ own aesthetic principles with optical precision. This branch has a particularly strong emphasis on MYKITA MYLON frames: extremely light and practical sports-style frames that make both a perfect companion for the mountains and also a practical everyday accessory.

The MYKITA Shop in Zermatt is a marriage of the modern and the traditional. The display window, with its original wood framing to re-tain the winter resort look, provides an open view of the all-white interior, with a design based on the progressive composition of different elements and contrasting materials. The room was stripped of its wood panelling to leave exposed concrete walls and floors. The steel girders were likewise liberated from their casing and restored to their original condition. The result is a kind of installation with a bold and simple construction that preserves the original character of the space. The primary design element of the shop interior is the MYKITA Wall. It comprises perforated steel angle beads that are reinvented from their regular function as heavy-duty shelving supports. The resulting structure is backlit and serves as a presentation area. Individual metal shelf elements inserted into the wall provide each model with its own little stage. The MYKITA Shop in Zermatt is in addition the first to feature an expansive MYKITA MYLON Wall, bringing the ”future look of sports” to the mountains. The integrated Relaxed Vision Center is a special lab equipped with state-of-the-art precision instruments from Carl Zeiss research. Customers can consult the MYKITA in-house optometrist, who generates customised optical profiles and performs an exact adaptation of the lenses to both the wearer’s eyesight and their facial physiognomy. Quality, precision and products ”made in Germany” are the common themes behind the partnership of MYKITA with the world-renowned optical solutions specialist Zeiss. Zermatt is now home to the ninth MYKITA Shop worldwide – joining Berlin, New York, Paris, Zurich, Vienna, Tokyo, Monterrey (Mexico) and Cartagena (Colombia).

CoSTUME NATIONAL is presenting a solo exhibition of the artist Hiroshi Sugimoto at CoSTUME NATIONAL Aoyama Complex, CNAC

“Hiroshi Sugimoto: Architecture of Time”
Following the sponsorship on the European Tour 2013 - Sonezaki shinju tsuketari. Kannon meguri - The Love Suicides at Sonezaki, CoSTUME NATIONAL is presenting a solo exhibition of Hiroshi Sugimoto in Tokyo at CNAC from October 19th to January 13th 2014.
Hiroshi Sugimoto is one of the best-known photographic artists of our time. His celebrated international reputation is based on his photography, such series as “Diorama”, “Theater”, “Seascape”, “Architecture” and “Portraits”. With this series on view, Sugimoto has essentially broken all the rules of architectural photography. Photographing great landmarks of modernist architecture around the world, Sugimoto has deliberately taken the images out of focus with his old large-format camera’s focal length, isolating the recognizable and superlative forms. The blurred forms evoke the passage of time, muting the architectural details and leaving the essence of the building; suggestive of the way in which our memories preserve images.

After New York... Shanghai!

I costumi disegnati da Miuccia Prada e Catherine Martin

per il film di Baz Luhrmann ‘Il Grande Gatsby’

ora in mostra a Shanghai

Miuccia Prada and Catherine Martin Dress Gatsby exhibition in Shanghai

Costumes designed by Miuccia Prada and Catherine Martin

for Baz Luhrmann’s upcoming film ‘The Great Gatsby’

on display in Shanghai

The travelling exhibition of selected costumes designed by Miuccia Prada and costume designer Catherine Martin for Baz Luhrmann’s film adaptation of The Great Gatsby is now on display at the Prada IFC store in Shanghai, China. The opening cocktail was held at the Prada and Miu Miu IFC stores on September 10 2013.
An Academy Award® and Tony® winning costume designer and art director, Catherine Martin is world-renowned for her collaborations with husband Baz Luhrmann on the films Strictly Ballroom, Romeo + Juliet, Moulin Rouge and the Broadway stage design for La Bohéme.
The exhibition - titled Catherine Martin and Miuccia Prada Dress Gatsby and curated by New York studio 2x4 - includes women’s gowns, dresses, hats, shoes and jewelry as well as sketches, production stills, backstage footage and film trailers.
Very strict guidelines came from Catherine Martin in terms of references and details on fabrics, colors, materials that had to be period accurate, but modern at the same time. While working on the costumes, Miuccia Prada realized how many pieces created for the Prada and Miu Miu runways in different seasons had a very ‘20s mood once integrated in the movie’s direction. At once historical and utterly contemporary, the dresses are realized in brilliant iridescent metallic lamé, sequins, silk taffeta, dyed fur, velvet and styled with fantastical hats, shoes and accessories.
The display is comprised of translucent Fiberglas mannequins lit from free-standing bases that include photographs and a brief biography of the character that wore the costume. The biographies reveal the rich and detailed way in which Catherine Martin imagines even minor characters in each scene. The mannequins are contextualized by a collage mural depicting the riotous party scene where many of the Prada and Miu Miu dresses make their appearance, and large-scale video displays that present scenes from the film.

Hello New York!

109 Crosby Street, SoHo, New York City – is the location of the very first MYKITA Shop in the US. The shop concept of the Berlin-based eyewear specialists unites the company’s own design principles with optical precision made in Germany.
The architecture of the MYKITA Shop is based on the progressive composition of different elements and contrasting materials. The unique concept is a marriage of three underlying features: mass-produced, ready-made objects removed from their original context, combined with purpose-designed furniture and a stage-like lighting concept. The result is an art installation with a bold and simple construction that retains the original character of the art deco factory building.
The primary design element of the shop interior is the all-white MYKITA Wall. It comprises perforated steel angle beads that are reinvented from their regular function as heavy-duty shelving supports. The resulting structure is backlit and serves as a presentation area giving the frames ample space to present themselves. Individual shelf elements inserted into the wall provide each model with its own little stage. In addition, out-of-service flight attendant trolleys that have circled the globe a thousand times are given a new lease of life here as a storage facility.
The integrated “Relaxed Vision Center” is a special lab equipped with state-of-the-art precision instruments from Carl Zeiss research. Customers can consult the MYKITA in-house optometrist, who generates customized optical profiles and performs an exact adaptation of frame and lens to the wearer’s face. Quality, precision and products “made in Germany” are the common themes behind the partnership of MYKITA with the worldrenowned optical solutions specialist Zeiss.
At night, when even NYC is alleged to sleep, the ceiling is lit up by a fluorescent-tube construct. The light installation is aligned with the old metal pipes from the original sprinkler system in a conscious reference to the building’s industrial heritage. This finishing touch unites the present with the architectural past.

New York is now home to the eighth MYKITA Shop worldwide – joining Berlin, Paris, Zurich, Vienna, Tokyo, Monterrey (Mexico) and Cartagena (Colombia).
The US accounts for around 20% of the international brand’s sales volume, making it one of the most important markets for the Berlin company.
