ora in mostra a Shanghai
Dopo New York e Tokyo, la mostra
itinerante di costumi disegnati da Miuccia Prada e dalla costumista Catherine
Martin per la versione cinematografica de Il Grande Gatsby di Baz
Luhrmann, è ora in esposizione a Shanghai presso il negozio Prada IFC. Ieri, 10
settembre, si è tenuto il cocktail di inaugurazione presso i negozi Prada e Miu
Miu di IFC.
Catherine Martin, costumista e
scenografa vincitrice di premi Oscar® e Tony®, è famosa in tutto il mondo per
la collaborazione con il marito Baz Luhrmann ai film Ballroom - Gara di
Ballo, Romeo + Giulietta, Moulin Rouge e alla scenografia de La
Bohéme per Broadway.
L’esposizione, dal titolo Catherine
Martin and Miuccia Prada Dress Gatsby, combina abiti da sera, vestiti,
cappelli, calzature e gioielli a schizzi, foto di scena, filmati del backstage
e trailer del film.
Catherine Martin ha suggerito
linee guida molto precise; i riferimenti e i dettagli di tessuti, colori e
materiali dovevano essere quelli dell’epoca, ma allo stesso tempo moderni.
Lavorando ai costumi, Miuccia Prada si è resa conto di quanti capi creati per
le sfilate Prada e Miu Miu di diverse stagioni avessero uno spirito tipicamente
anni ‘20 una volta integrati nella regia del film. Gli abiti, storici e
assolutamente contemporanei al tempo stesso, sono realizzati in brillante lamé
metallico iridescente, paillettes, taffetà di seta, pelliccia colorata e
velluto, e abbinati a fantastici cappelli, calzature e accessori.

L’allestimento, a cura dello
studio 2x4 di New York, è composto da una serie di manichini semi trasparenti
in vetroresina, illuminati da basi d’appoggio dove sono presenti anche le
fotografie e una breve biografia del personaggio che ha indossato quel costume.
La biografia mette in evidenza la ricchezza di dettagli con cui Catherine
Martin immagina i personaggi di contorno in ogni scena. I manichini sono
contestualizzati da un murale a collage che rappresenta la scena della festa in
cui appaiono molti dei vestiti Prada e Miu Miu, e da grandi video dove scorrono
le scene del film.

upcoming film ‘The Great Gatsby’
on display in Shanghai
The travelling exhibition of
selected costumes designed by Miuccia Prada and costume designer Catherine
Martin for Baz Luhrmann’s film adaptation of The Great Gatsby is now on display
at the Prada IFC store in Shanghai, China. The opening cocktail was held at the
Prada and Miu Miu IFC stores on September 10 2013.
An Academy Award® and Tony®
winning costume designer and art director, Catherine Martin is world-renowned
for her collaborations with husband Baz Luhrmann on the films Strictly
Ballroom, Romeo + Juliet, Moulin Rouge and the Broadway stage design for La
Bohéme.
The exhibition - titled Catherine
Martin and Miuccia Prada Dress Gatsby and curated by New York studio 2x4 -
includes women’s gowns, dresses, hats, shoes and jewelry as well as sketches,
production stills, backstage footage and film trailers.
Very strict guidelines came
from Catherine Martin in terms of references and details on fabrics, colors,
materials that had to be period accurate, but modern at the same time. While
working on the costumes, Miuccia Prada realized how many pieces created for the
Prada and Miu Miu runways in different seasons had a very ‘20s mood once
integrated in the movie’s direction. At once historical and utterly
contemporary, the dresses are realized in brilliant iridescent metallic lamé,
sequins, silk taffeta, dyed fur, velvet and styled with fantastical hats, shoes
and accessories.
The display is comprised of translucent Fiberglas mannequins lit from
free-standing bases that include photographs and a brief biography of the
character that wore the costume. The biographies reveal the rich and detailed
way in which Catherine Martin imagines even minor characters in each scene. The
mannequins are contextualized by a collage mural depicting the riotous party
scene where many of the Prada and Miu Miu dresses make their appearance, and
large-scale video displays that present scenes from the film.
