Prada comes to Harrods

Prada: A cosmos of its own
composed of heavenly bodies
set in a complex orbit.
A universe of contradictions
and endless elaborations—
noble causes and base temptations—
where idealism meets vanity,
intelligence meets passion,
fashion meets fiction.
Welcome to the Pradasphere

“Any modern city shop, with its elegant vitrines where useful and delightful objects are displayed, is more aesthetically pleasing than even the most praised passé exhibition. A metallic-white, tri-lucent sleek, super clean electric flatiron delights the eye more than a puny nude statuette perched on a worn-out pedestal repainted for the occasion. A typewriter is more architectonic than the buildings celebrated in academies and competitions. The windows of the perfume shop too, filled with boxes large and small, little bottles, and tiny future triple-colored phials, all reflected in extremely elegant mirrors; the clever and coquettish arrays of delicate ladies’ shoes; the bizarre ingenuity of multi-coloured umbrellas; fur, leather goods, silverware, all please the eye more than the grimy little paintings nailed to the grey walls of the passé painter’s studio.”

This May, Harrods Knightsbridge, the world’s most famous department store, hosts Prada as an honoured guest. The month-long celebration includes 40 window displays, a pop-up store, multiple screen displays, an elegant Marchesi café, and Pradasphere: an exhibition that traces the company’s multivalent obsessions—from fashion and accessories to art, architecture, cinema, sport and beyond.

the exhibition
Housed on the Fourth Floor of Harrods, Pradasphere is a collection of archival objects arranged to reveal the complex, often intertwined obsessions of Prada. The Prada vision is manifest in everything from fashion and accessories to art, architecture, film, and culture. Pradasphere posits that there are core ideas—beauty, taste, embellishment, gender, vanity, and power—that are repeatedly reworked through those diverse channels. The Prada oeuvre represents both an aesthetic journey and a critique enacted through the products of culture. Yet it is also an unabashed celebration of exquisite craftsmanship, a paean to the rare and the finely wrought, and a wholehearted endorsement of the stylistic iconoclast.
The centrepiece of Pradasphere comprises six towering showcases dedicated to the central themes that have distinguished the work of Prada. The displays combine ensembles from multiple collections to demonstrate the recurrent concepts present in the products. In addition, the exhibition includes: heritage items from the Prada archives; shoes and bags from past collections organised by theme; examples of exquisite fabrics and materials; a Prada history wall that links the design collections with all of the extracurricular projects, from Fondazione Prada to Luna Rossa; a screening room presenting short films from directors such as Roman Polanski, Wes Anderson, Ridley Scott, and Yang Fudong; architectural projects from Rem Koolhaas/oma and Herzog & de Meuron; and a library of publications, both physical and digital.
A private lounge is adjacent to the exhibition space. The walls and ceiling of the intimate room are wrapped entirely in deep green velvet that matches the Clover Leaf sofas—a revival of Verner Panton’s modern classic reproduced exclusively for Prada—that furnish the space. The contrast created between the black-and-white carpeted floor and the velvet-covered walls adds to the aura of contemporary luxury.

prada pop-up store
The 130m2 Prada pop-up store is on the Ground Floor adjacent to the entrance at the corner of Brompton Road and Hans Crescent. Designed in classic Prada style, the shop features an iconic black-and-white-chequered marble floor, slim polished-steel and crystal display shelves, striking black marble portals, steel and crystal display counters, and lilac velvet ottomans. The boutique showcases women’s leather goods, accessories, jewellery and eyewear.

windows

Harrods’ windows represent Prada’s multifaceted identity. The hybrid approach, a quintessential feature of Prada’s design philosophy, is evident in the recurrent themes and motifs combined in each tableau. The windows serve as an index of classic store elements, from marble floors to green ‘sponge’ walls. The windows also reference Prada’s contributions to popular culture, art, architecture, and film, revealing the complexity of the company’s approach to fashion.

marchesi café

Directly alongside the Pradasphere exhibition, against a backdrop of the London skyline, is the Marchesi café, patisserie, and restaurant. Marchesi is a legendary Milanese patisserie founded in 1824, renowned for its wide range of delicious pastries, chocolates, and Panettone, the traditional Milanese Christmas cake. The original architecture of the balcony room, with its exquisite boiserie and subtle lighting, has been preserved for the temporary café. The wallpaper covering the bar counter features exact replicas of the details and decorations found at the original Marchesi patisserie, and the bar mirrors display images of its early 20th-century splendour. Opposite the bar, a wall with mirrors and crystal-lined alcoves presents a selection of Marchesi products and a display of boxed delicacies.

prada pop-up store

Joie de Vivre and Good Karma à Munich

Georgia May Jagger, Nico Rosberg, Paz Vega and Rosanna Davison among the guests at the
exclusive THOMAS SABO Party Karma Night

Munich/Lauf a. d. Pegnitz, February 15, 2014

Joie de vivre, good Karma and party atmosphere: on Saturday night (15/02/2014), host and company founder Thomas Sabo invited around 1,400 friends and partners of the brand and press representatives from all over the world to the exclusive Karma Night at Munich’s Postpalast venue. The long party night was very much in keeping with the spirit of the Karma Beads –the new 2014 Spring/Summer Sterling Silver Collection jewellery line – launched only a few weeks previously. The motto of the evening: ‘Such a good Karma – THOMAS SABO celebrates life!’
In addition to the attending brand ambassadors Georgia May Jagger and Nico Rosberg, guests also
included international celebrities such as Spanish actress Paz Vega, Chris de Burgh’s daughter Rosanna Davison and English DJ Laura Whitmore. And numerous German celebrities were in attendance as well, including Sönke Möhring, Jana Pallaske, Jeanette Hain, Papis Loveday, Natasha and Jimi Blue Ochsenknecht, Nova Meierhenrich and Stephanie Stumph, none wanting to miss out on partying with the brand as ‘Good Karma People’. Adorned with her favourite jewels from the latest THOMAS SABO collections, they all presented their very own personal Karma Style.
Very much in line with the ‘Rebel at heart’ men’s collection, the one-hour concert with the band Triggerfinger created a fantastic Rock ‘n’ Roll vibe among the guests. Following the gig, the guests partied away until the early hours of the morning to the fabulous sounds of DJ Chrissi D! and with a wonderful selection of delicacies from Käfer. The evening was MC’d by hugely-charismatic presenter Alexander Mazza.
Thomas Sabo speaking about Karma Night: “I am absolutely thrilled that so many THOMAS SABO friends and partners have joined us to experience this one-off party night. The joie de vivre and the positive spirit of our new jewellery line – THOMAS SABO Karma Beads – was completely tangible:
celebrating life and infecting others in the process!”

GITANE COLLECTION by Carolina Bucci

The Smile necklace studded in diamonds, opals and purple jade is just one of the new silhouettes from the Gitane collection - a carefree mix of exotic femininity and old-world magic

Gitane, which means gypsy woman, is full of passion and colour and movement

The Gitane collection – French for gypsy woman – is a delicate, carefree mix of exotic femininity and old-world magic. Jewellery that is at once full of passion and mysticism, colour and movement.

The owl is a central character in this collection. Knowing and yet unknowable, the nocturnal owl features in pendants where opal eyes blink back at you as the light catches them. In other pieces the owl’s feathers are picked out in rings and large cuffs – 18kt gold worked to take on the texture of plumage. “I wanted to do something a little different with this collection,” Carolina Bucci explains, “and these echo Verdura’s flamboyant pieces that I love so much.”
The other motif that appears is the smile – delicate pendants studded with turquoise and diamonds, the Gitane smile is both feminine and full of strength of emotion: the smile of a young Sophia Loren, or Claudia Cardinale, both of whom feature in Carolina’s collection mood board that she assembled while designing.
Finally, this is the first Carolina Bucci collection where earrings play such a large part. Bold hoops, expanding in concentric circles, or stems of gold that swing like pendulums, the earrings have one unifying theme: that of movement. As light as air, these cascading golden gems are the ultimate summer accessories.

Carolina Bucci for Dianora Salviati

Alongside the Gitane collection, Carolina has designed an exclusive range of cashmere scarves that echo her signature silk and gold jewellery, mixing a sfumato wash of coloured cashmere with herringbone-patterned sparkling lurex thread

Carolina is proud to produce these scarves alongside renowned scarf designer Dianora Salviati, linking up with another woman committed to the traditions of Italian craftsmanship. Dianora's workshops are based in Tuscany, a short drive from Florence, where all of her scarves are made by hand

Available from Carolina Bucci, Motcomb Street, London

Prada Resort 2014 Advertising Campaign

Prada Resort 2014 Advertising Campaign

Reclined in the twilight of an anti-paradise, the stars of Prada’s resort campaign fix us with a seductive stare. At first glance they could be mistaken for angelic beauties, immaculate in a sea of luminous floral prints and jeweled accessories. But there is a darker more powerful side to these women and this story shot by Steven Meisel, a twist in the tale that is quintessentially Prada.
Amanda Murphy, Anna Ewers and Cameron Russell are knowing seductresses, modern femme fatales moon-bathing in a nocturnal paradise where dreams have become dislodged. The pale lighting that illuminates their faces like moonbeams extracts all natural colour and form from their features and re-paints it onto the clothes, bags and jewellery.
The practicality of a khaki sunbed and simplicity of grey slate flagging provide a stonecold contrast to the tropical prints and bold colours of the collection. In this nocturnal utopia the feminine power and strength of the models takes over, as if the force of the moon itself was propelling their steady, sensual pose.

AMBERIF 2013

AMBERIF - The Amber Fair in Gdańsk

20. International Fair of Amber, Jewellery and Gemstones
20-23.03.2013
450 exhibitors from 14 countries – from Europe to India – will come to AMBERIF 2013, the 20th anniversary edition of the International Fair of Amber, Jewellery and Gemstones, with trade visitors expected from 40 countries. For the first time, the event will be held at the new AMBEREXPO Exhibition and Convention Centre.

The products exhibited at AMBERIF include: Baltic amber jewellery; silver and gold jewellery decorated with amber; jewellery with gemstones, pearls and diamonds. The Designers’ Gallery, where artists exhibit their work, enjoys a great deal of interest every year.
AMBERIF is a trade-only event. It is addressed to the owners of jewellery stores, wholesale outlets and art galleries from all the continents who make it possible for Polish jewellery to reach customers all over the world. AMBERIF attendees also include tourism and marketing companies who wish to incorporate amber into their product offer or image. AMBERIF is an excellent opportunity to establish business relations and to get an overview of the global trends.

The first AMBERIF had 49 exhibitors. Today, their attendance has increased almost tenfold
“More than 450 companies will come to AMBERIF 2013, from countries including Poland, Belgium, Lithuania and Italy,” says AMBERIF and AMBERMART Project Director Ewa Rachoń. “Every year, the fair has a footfall of ca. 6000, including trade visitors from all over the world, from nearly 50 countries.”
Four exhibitors have participated in AMBERIF continuously for 20 years: AMBER Klaudiusz Buzalski, DUKAT Marian Węsiora, LUX Jan Bryksy and Jerzy Zauliczny.
Marcin Bazulski, of the AMBER company, represents AMBERIF’s second generation. He has taken over from his father and between them they have not missed a single edition of the event.
“AMBERIF to us is what the harvest is to a farmer,” admits Marcin Bazulski. “It allows us to follow our philosophy: we manufacture, others do the selling.”

Each year, AMBERIF is accompanied by multiple education and popular science events. For example, there is a series of seminars dedicated to subjects that are important to experts and enthusiasts of jewellery, amber, design and fashion. There is the Amber Laboratory, where every AMBERIF customer may not only find information but also get a lab test done to confirm the type of the amber they’ve purchased – all free of charge. The SRJ Association of Jewellery Experts organises a gemmology seminar in partnership with the HRD Diamond High Council of Antwerp.
During the fair, the Amber. Treasure of Poland Consortium will run three projects: a media tour for 9 journalists from Germany, Italy, the USA and China, a special edition of the Amber and Fashion Gala – the Amber Look Trend & Style fashion show and a two-day International Amber Researcher Symposium on Amber. Deposits—Collections—The Market addressed to 100 participants. The Symposium is organised in partnership with: the PAS Museum of the Earth, Warsaw, the University of Gdańsk, Gdańsk University of Technology, the Academies of Fine Arts in Gdańsk and Łódź and the International Amber Association.
Almost PLN 7 million will be allocated by Poland’s Ministry of Economy for amber promotion. Spread over the 2012–2014 period, the project covers a wide range of promotional activities, including Polish companies’ participation in jewellery trade shows worldwide, media tours with trade journalists from abroad coming to Poland and an advertising campaign in the German, Italian, US and Chinese consumer media.
The AMBER LOOK Trends&Styles 2013 Amber and Fashion Gala is an inseparable and much anticipated item on AMBERIF’s agenda. Every year, designer creations shine on the catwalk. In duos, and sometimes in trios, jewellery designers work with fashion designers to create consistent fashion concepts, with amber in the lead role.
“This year, we are celebrating the 20th anniversary of AMBERIF and to mark the occasion we are going to hold the Gala in a new venue hoping that the event will enter its next decade with a new and contemporary image,” says Michał Starost, the Gala’s Art Director and one of the most versatile and celebrated Polish designers whose roots are in the Tri-City of Gdańsk, Gdynia and Sopot.
And so, the Gala will take place in the post-industrial space of the Gdańsk Shipyard Centre rather than, as it used to in previous years, in the Concert Hall of the Polish Baltic Philharmonic.

It is worth remembering that AMBERIF is also a brand which promotes artists and their art. Its competitions include the international AMBERIF DESIGN AWARD, which has been held for designers, artists and craftspeople since the third edition of the fair. This year, the competition subject was: a ring, with 152 entries submitted by 110 artists from 17 countries. The international celebrity jury awarded the main prize, sponsored by the Mayor of Gdańsk Paweł Adamowicz, to Polish artist Bożena Czarnecka for an extremely clever design. The ring is made of caramel, so deceptively similar to amber in its colour and translucency, in which small amber pieces are embedded to turn the amber itself into an inclusion. And to top it all, the ring can be . . . eaten. AMBERIF competition prizes will be presented at the Gala.
The annual compendium of knowledge about amber entitled TREND BOOK 2013+ will be launched at AMBERIF; it was written by Prof. Sławomir Fijałkowski, head of the Functional Forms and Jewellery Design Studio, Design Faculty, Gdańsk Academy of Fine Arts, exhibition curator and competition judge.
“To me, it’s the quality criterion that matters. Contemporary solutions can be sought even in a traditional form. Amber is relatively easy to work with and comes in large sizes, which encourages the search for new cuts, new forms,” says Sławomir Fijałkowski.

The 20th anniversary AMBERIF is held for the first time in the new venue. The new AmberExpo centre is located next to Gdańsk’s amber-nugget shaped football stadium built for last year’s European Football Championship. AmberExpo is one of the most cutting-edge exhibition and convention centres in Europe. It offers three integrated exhibition halls with a total floor space of 12,000 m2, a Conference Centre with 4 rooms for more than 1000 participants and a mobile space arrangement option, a Restaurant and a car park for 430 vehicles.

It is no coincidence that the AMBERIF International Fair of Amber, Jewellery and Gemstones – the largest amber trade show in the world – takes place in Gdańsk. With its Hanse tradition, located on the Baltic Sea coast, Gdańsk is known as the World Capital of Amber. Amber from the Bay of Gdańsk has been recognised for centuries in the Baltic Sea region and went on to reach the most distant parts of Europe. Traces of the oldest amber workshop in Gdańsk come from the late 10th century. It produced beads, rings, pendants, dice, game pieces and amulets and – after the 997 great baptism of Gdańsk by St Adalbert – also crosses. Archaeologists discovered about 1000 workshops in the area which manufactured amber jewellery and functional objects of daily use.

Every year, Gdańsk hosts two jewellery trade fairs: AMBERIF, held always in the spring, with 20 years in the business, and AMBERMART – in the autumn, with 14 years to its name. Both events are organised by the MTG SA Gdańsk International Fair Co.

AMBERIF’s honorary auspices are held by: Marshal of the Polish Senate Bogdan Borusewicz, Deputy Prime Minister Janusz Piechociński, Pomerania Region Voivod Ryszard Stachurski, Pomerania Marshal Mieczysław Struk and Mayor of Gdańsk Paweł Adamowicz.

More than 450 Exhibitors from Poland, Belgium, Czech Republic, Germany, Italy, Lithuania and Ukraine, as well as trade visitors from over 50 countries. AMBERIF is a trade-only event – addressed to persons and businesses who trade in jewellery, jewellery art and functional art. AMBERIF’s agenda will be developed in partnership with our long-standing partners including the SRJ Polish Association of Jewellery Experts, the HRD Diamond High Council of Antwerp, the Pomeranian Skilled Crafts Chamber of SMEs, the Polish Chamber of Amber Commerce, the International Amber Association and the STFZ Goldsmithing Artists’ Association.
